I’d spent Tuesday afternoon in London doing some research for the #zlistdeadlist. While I was in the Science Museum I was much taken with Bennet Woodcroft (1803-1879), a man obsessed by steam locomotives and documenting the industrial revolution.
By wonderful coincidence on my journey home, I stumbled over this historic gem (GWR 4073 5029 Nunney Castle from 1934). Seeing the steam rise through the new station at Reading felt a Dr Who, Harry Potter and Brief Encounter mash up. It suddenly struck me why the old Victorian stations all have such high ceilings… for the steam! They weren’t just being pompous. I do love that these trains are still preserved and looked after… and so would Bennet Woodcroft.
